Main Switches Guide in Switchboards: Isolator Switch vs Circuit Breaker

Some switchboards have a main switch that is just an isolator, while others have a main circuit breaker. This main switch guide will help you understand the difference between the two and why it's important to know.
An isolator is a manual switch that simply disconnects power to the whole home. It allows for safe maintenance but does not offer any protection if there’s an overload or fault.

A main circuit breaker also disconnects power, but it goes a step further by providing overcurrent protection. If there’s too much current flowing through the system, it will trip automatically to help prevent damage, fire, or electrical hazards.

According to AS3000 wiring rules, every installation must have proper overcurrent protection. If your main switch is only an isolator, your home may not be fully protected.
Your electrician should always let you know which one you have and whether it meets current safety standards.
If you’re unsure, Bamford Electrical can inspect your switchboard and let you know if any upgrades are needed to keep your home safe and compliant.
